South Africa’s reputation abroad rests on two words: crime and chaos. Ask anyone in London or Sydney what comes to mind, and safety concerns may top the list.

That reputation carries some truth. The country’s crime index sat at 74.6 in 2026, a level considered high, though it marked one of the lowest readings recorded since 2014.

A Numbeo <a href="https://www.guidafrica.com/en/blog/south-africa-a-paradise-tainted-by-alarming-crime-ranked-5th-most-dangerous-tourist-destination-globally/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>assessment placed South Africa fifth among the world’s most dangerous tourist destinations, just behind Afghanistan. Numbers like these travel fast and stick even faster.

SOUTH AFRICA’S REPUTATION MEETS THE TOURISM BOOM

Despite the warnings, people keep coming. Roughly 10.5 million tourists visited South Africa in 2025, drawn by safaris, coastlines and canyons that few countries can match. Tourism now contributes close to 9 per cent of the country’s GDP and supports up to 1.8 million jobs, outperforming sectors such as agriculture and construction.

That scale of growth tells its own story. Visitors read the travel advisories, weigh the risk, and book the flight anyway. The Kruger and the Winelands still sell themselves, reputation or not.

WHY SOUTH AFRICA’S REPUTATION DOESN’T MATCH EVERY POSTCODE

Crime in South Africa concentrates heavily in specific areas. A large share of violent incidents happens in a handful of districts, including parts of Cape Town and Johannesburg. Tourist zones tell a different story entirely.

National parks, luxury lodges and dedicated tourist precincts typically run private security and controlled access, creating conditions far removed from high-crime urban pockets. A guest at a Sabi Sands lodge experiences a different country to a commuter in central Johannesburg after dark.

Locals know this instinctively. They choose secure parking, avoid certain routes at night, and adjust habits without much thought.

Visitors need the same local knowledge, which rarely makes it into a headline.

LIVING WITH THE GAP BETWEEN IMAGE AND EXPERIENCE

The government has responded to rising violent crime by deploying more than 5 000 additional police officers and over 2 000 troops. Whether that shifts the country’s global image remains uncertain, since perception often lags behind policy.

For residents and expats alike, daily life carries more nuance than any index.

Braais still happen on Sunday afternoons.

    Markets still open on time.

Neighbours still wave from across the street.

South Africa’s reputation abroad will likely take years to catch up with how most people actually live.

Until then, the gap between headline and home remains part of the story.
