The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has warned Nigerians, especially job seekers, to be cautious of fraudulent government recruitment schemes, stressing that genuine public service employment opportunities are never sold.
In a statement published on its official website on Tuesday, July 28, the commission said the increasing search for government jobs had created opportunities for fraudsters who exploit the hopes of unemployed Nigerians through fake recruitment claims.
The FCC noted that while government recruitment announcements often generate excitement among applicants seeking career stability and opportunities to contribute to national development, scammers use such periods to deceive unsuspecting individuals.
“First rule of public service recruitment in Nigeria: genuine government jobs are never for sale,” the commission stated.
The FCC outlined some warning signs Nigerians should watch out for when applying for government employment opportunities, including:
1. Requests for payment before employment

According to the commission, one of the biggest indicators of a recruitment scam is a demand for money in exchange for securing a government job.
It said fraudsters often impersonate government officials, recruitment agents or individuals with connections within government institutions, promising that payment would guarantee selection.
“Legitimate recruitment processes do not operate through unofficial payments to individuals,” the FCC warned.
The commission advised applicants to be wary of anyone requesting money to process applications or improve their chances of being selected.
2. Fake recruitment websites and unofficial links
The FCC warned Nigerians against clicking on suspicious recruitment links shared through social media platforms, private messages or unofficial groups.
It said scammers often create websites designed to look like official government recruitment portals to collect personal information from applicants.
The commission advised job seekers to always verify recruitment announcements through recognised government websites and official communication channels.
3. Promises of guaranteed employment
The commission said no genuine recruitment exercise can guarantee employment before the completion of the official selection process.
It warned applicants against messages claiming that their names had already been included among successful candidates or that they could secure a position by paying immediately.
“Statements such as ‘your name has already been included’ or ‘pay now to secure your slot’ are common tactics used by scammers,” the FCC said.
4. Individuals claiming special government connections
The FCC also cautioned Nigerians against individuals who claim they can influence recruitment outcomes because of their connections with government officials.
According to the commission, such claims are usually designed to pressure applicants into making quick decisions.
It stressed that legitimate government recruitment follows established procedures and cannot be guaranteed by individuals.
5. Always verify recruitment information before applying
The FCC urged Nigerians to confirm recruitment announcements through officialcations
The commission said it has created a dedicated recruitment platform on its official website where vacancies from federal institutions can be published.
Through the platform, applicants can access verified information about available opportunities and proceed to the appropriate ministry, department, agency or government institution responsible for the recruitment process.
However, the FCC clarified that the platform does not mean the commission conducts recruitment for other government institutions.
“The Federal Character Commission does not conduct recruitment on behalf of these institutions,” it stated.
The commission explained that the responsibility for advertising vacancies, receiving applications, assessing candidates and selecting successful applicants remains with the relevant recruiting organisations.
6. Understand the role of the Federal Character Commission
The FCC also addressed what it described as a common misunderstanding about its role in government recruitment.
The commission explained that it does not sell jobs, select candidates for federal employment or guarantee appointments.
Rather, it promotes fairness, equity and transparency in recruitment and appointments within federal institutions through monitoring compliance with the Federal Character Principle.
The principle, provided under Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), requires that the composition of government institutions reflect Nigeria’s diversity and promote national unity.
7. Use only official channels for government opportunities
The commission advised Nigerians to avoid relying on forwarded messages, unofficial links or individuals claiming access to government employment opportunities.
It urged applicants to follow recruitment instructions provided by the relevant ministries, departments, agencies and government institutions.
“Verify information, rely on officialge for money,” the FCC advised
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting fairness and inclusion across Nigeria’s public institutions while providing Nigerians with access to verified information on federal opportunities.
It also urged citizens to rely on updates from its official channels and website for accurate information about its activities and mandate.
