During World Breastfeeding Week, observed from 1 to 7 August, specialist dietitian Mbali Mapholi has shared insights into how rooibos can complement healthy breastfeeding routines.

Mapholi, a dietitian and partner of Laager Rooibos, said breastfeeding requires significant nutritional and hydration support, with mothers needing additional calories, vitamins, minerals and fluids to maintain their own health while supporting infant development.

“For mothers who choose to and can breastfeed, it is one of the best gifts you can give your baby. However, it is a big job for your body,” she said.

She explained that breastfeeding mothers typically require an additional 500 to 700 calories daily, alongside increased hydration and nutrient intake.

While many mothers explore supplements and herbal products to support breastfeeding, Mapholi said rooibos offers a simple, naturally caffeine-free option that can contribute to overall wellness.

“Rooibos is not a medication or a galactagogue that directly stimulates milk production, but it can help create an environment that supports breastfeeding,” she said.

According to Mapholi, rooibos may support breastfeeding mothers in three key ways: hydration, recovery and relaxation.

Breast milk contains a high proportion of water, making adequate fluid intake essential for maintaining milk production.

Unlike caffeinated drinks, rooibos does not contribute to caffeine intake and can form part of a mother’s daily hydration routine.

“Because Laager Rooibos tastes great and is naturally caffeine-free, it can help mothers reach the recommended daily fluid intake of around three litres,” she said.

Mapholi added that the antioxidants found in rooibos may help the body manage oxidative stress and support recovery after childbirth.

“The post-partum period is physically demanding, and recovery requires adequate nutrition and rest. Rooibos contains unique antioxidants that can support mothers as they recover after birth,” she said.

She also highlighted the importance of emotional wellbeing during breastfeeding, noting that relaxation can influence the milk let-down reflex, which is linked to oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and calmness.

“Simple rituals, such as taking a few minutes to enjoy a warm cup of rooibos before feeding, can help mothers create moments of relaxation and self-care,” she said.

Laager Rooibos has also shared recipes designed for breastfeeding mothers, including a rooibos latte, citrus cooler and rooibos date loaf, offering practical ways to incorporate the beverage into daily routines.

The company said rooibos is naturally caffeine-free and contains antioxidants, with potential wellness benefits including cardiovascular support and blood sugar management.

Laager is the only rooibos teabag endorsed by the Heart & Stroke Foundation South Africa and offers a range of products, including flavoured rooibos varieties and children’s options under the Tea4Kidz brand.

Mapholi cautioned that every breastfeeding journey is different and encouraged mothers with concerns about milk supply, infant growth or emotional wellbeing to seek advice from healthcare professionals or lactation experts.

“While rooibos can be a valuable addition to a healthy breastfeeding routine, it is important to remember that every mother’s journey is unique,” she said.
