- The naming of the Tiznit-Dakhla road link as the “Donald Trump Motorway” marks a new step in strategic relations between Morocco and the United States
- The motorway is key to the region’s territorial integration and economic development
The decision to name the Tiznit-Dakhla road link the “President Donald Trump Motorway” goes beyond the scope of a mere institutional designation. The initiative is seen as a new step in consolidating the strategic relationship between Morocco and the United States, by anchoring that cooperation in a key piece of infrastructure for territorial integration, economic development and regional connectivity.
Key to connectivity with West Africa
Beyond its symbolic significance, this road represents one of the main logistics corridors in southern Morocco and is a central element in the Kingdom’s strategy to strengthen its Atlantic coastline and expand its connections with West Africa. In this context, the choice of name takes on a political dimension that links US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara with an infrastructure project designed to transform mobility, trade and supply chains in the region.
The initiative also reflects the evolution of a bilateral relationship that has progressively incorporated economic, commercial and security elements alongside traditional diplomatic cooperation. The motorway thus serves as a tool to facilitate territorial integration, boost logistics activity and consolidate Morocco’s role as a hub between Europe, the Atlantic and the African continent.
From this perspective, the infrastructure not only improves connectivity between the north and south of the country, but also enhances access to the Guergarat border crossing, considered a strategic point for commercial transit to West African markets. Its development also helps to strengthen the stability of transport routes and create a more favourable environment for international investment.
The geo-economic dimension of the project takes on particular significance in a context characterised by competition for trade corridors and logistics chains. The combination of major infrastructure, openness towards the Atlantic and international cooperation positions Morocco as a player of growing importance in facilitating trade between Africa and Western markets.
Moroccan diplomatic tradition
The motorway’s name also forms part of a diplomatic tradition upheld by Morocco for decades. Various public spaces and infrastructure projects across the country are named after prominent US presidents, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, reflecting the continuity of bilateral relations that rank among the longest-standing established by the United States with an Arab and African country.
In this regard, the inclusion of Donald Trump’s name in this infrastructure can be interpreted as a new chapter in this historical trajectory, at a time when Rabat is seeking to project an image of institutional stability and continuity in its strategic alliances. More than a mere ceremonial gesture, the initiative aims to reinforce the message that cooperation between the two countries extends to the political, economic and territorial development spheres.
From a geopolitical perspective, the motorway thus takes on a significance that goes beyond its function as transport infrastructure. It is emerging as a strategic corridor designed to strengthen Atlantic connectivity, promote regional integration and consolidate Morocco’s role as a logistics hub between the Maghreb, the Sahel and West Africa, within an international context where infrastructure has become a tool for influence, security and economic projection.
Morocco, a strategic partner of Washington
From the US strategic perspective, Morocco has, over recent decades, consolidated its position as a key partner in North and West Africa. Beyond its geographical location, Washington regards the country as an ally capable of contributing to regional stability, strengthening maritime security and collaborating in areas such as counter-terrorism, intelligence-sharing and the protection of international trade routes.
This perception stems from a bilateral relationship built on decades of political, economic and military cooperation. Within this framework, the strategy promoted by King Mohammed VI to strengthen the country’s Atlantic and African reach is viewed in the United States as an opportunity to enhance connectivity between Africa and Western markets through new logistics infrastructure and transport corridors. The decision to name the Tiznit–Dakhla road after President Donald Trump is interpreted, from this perspective, as a gesture symbolising the continuity of a long-standing strategic alliance.
Relations between the two countries have deep historical roots. Morocco was one of the first states to recognise the independence of the United States in the late 18th century, a relationship that was consolidated by the Treaty of Friendship of 1786, considered one of the oldest diplomatic agreements still in force for Washington. Subsequently, the opening of the US Legation in Tangier and the contacts maintained throughout the 20th century helped to strengthen a cooperation that intensified during the Second World War and in the period following Moroccan independence.
Throughout the reign of Hassan II, the bilateral relationship took on a marked strategic dimension, particularly regarding regional security and stability in the Mediterranean. This cooperation expanded with the accession of Mohammed VI to the throne, whose reign has been characterised by a strengthening of political, commercial and military ties with the United States.
Strengthening of ties during the reign of Mohammed VI
Among the most significant milestones of this period are the signing of the Free Trade Agreement, the designation of Morocco as a major non-NATO ally in 2004, and the strengthening of defence cooperation, reflected in joint exercises such as African Lion, considered among the most important multinational military manoeuvres on the continent. Added to this, in 2020, was the Trump Administration’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, a step that Rabat interprets as a turning point in the evolution of bilateral relations.
The importance of the Tiznit–Dakhla motorway must also be analysed in the context of Morocco’s maritime strategy. This infrastructure constitutes one of the main land corridors linked to the Atlantic Initiative promoted by Morocco, which aims to facilitate access for Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean and to foster new trade corridors towards West Africa.
Within this framework, the motorway plays a complementary role to the future Atlantic port of Dakhla, forming a logistics system that combines land and sea transport to strengthen the competitiveness of Morocco’s Atlantic coastline. The integration of these two infrastructure projects aims to transform the south of the country into a distribution hub for goods from Europe, the Americas and Africa.
The strategy aligns with the growing interest of the United States and other Western partners in ensuring the security of Atlantic routes and diversifying global supply chains. In this context, the stability of the corridor linking northern Morocco to the Guergarat border crossing is becoming increasingly important for regional trade and for the continent’s economic outlook.
At the same time, the development of this infrastructure poses new challenges for local authorities in the southern provinces. The consolidation of industrial zones, logistics hubs and international cooperation agreements with US cities and organisations could boost the region’s appeal to investors and foster greater internationalisation of its economy.
From this perspective, the naming of the motorway represents not only political recognition but is also part of a broader strategy aimed at consolidating Morocco’s position as a logistics hub between the Atlantic, the Sahel and West Africa. The Tiznit–Dakhla corridor thus becomes part of a connectivity project that combines infrastructure, economic diplomacy and international cooperation, with the aim of strengthening the country’s role in the new geopolitical architecture of the African Atlantic.
