Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal produced another breathtaking performance to successfully defend her Commonwealth Games title, winning the women’s 58kg weightlifting gold with three record-breaking lifts as Team Nigeria continued its impressive medal surge at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The reigning Commonwealth champion was in a class of her own throughout the competition, setting new Games records in the snatch, clean and jerk and total lift to secure Nigeria’s sixth gold medal of the Games. Blueprint reports

Her latest triumph also marked Team Nigeria’s third gold medal of the day and reinforced the country’s dominance in weightlifting, a sport that has consistently delivered medals for the nation at major international competitions.

Lawal dominates from start to finish

Lawal arrived in Glasgow as the defending champion and one of the favourites for the title, but she left no one in doubt about her superiority with a commanding display that left her rivals battling for the minor medals.

She opened confidently with a successful 90kg lift in the snatch before increasing the weight on subsequent attempts.

On her final lift in the discipline, the Nigerian powered 103kg above her head to set a new Commonwealth Games record and establish a commanding nine-kilogram advantage over the rest of the field heading into the clean and jerk.

With the pressure mounting on her challengers, Lawal remained composed and produced another outstanding performance in the clean and jerk.

She successfully lifted 126kg, another Games record, to finish with a combined total of 229kg, completing a clean sweep of the competition and successfully defending the title she won at the previous edition of the Games.

Rivals settle for silver and bronze

Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau finished second with a combined lift of 215kg to claim the silver medal after putting up a spirited challenge.

Australia’s Lani Tracey completed the podium with a total lift of 196kg to secure the bronze medal.

However, neither athlete came close to matching the consistency, strength and technical brilliance displayed by the Nigerian champion throughout the contest.

    Nigeria’s weightlifting dominance continues

Lawal’s victory further highlighted Nigeria’s reputation as one of the Commonwealth’s leading nations in weightlifting.

The country’s lifters have continued to deliver medals on the biggest stages, and Glasgow has been no exception.

Her gold medal was Nigeria’s third weightlifting gold of the Games, underlining the depth of talent within the country’s weightlifting team and the effectiveness of the National Sports Commission’s preparations ahead of the competition.

The triumph also increased Nigeria’s gold medal tally to six, strengthening the country’s position on the medals table as Team Nigeria pursues one of its best-ever outings at the Commonwealth Games.

    Dream day for Team Nigeria

Lawal’s success capped another memorable day for Team Nigeria, which continued its impressive run across different sporting events.

Earlier in the day, Nigerian athletes had already added more medals to the country’s tally, maintaining the momentum generated during the opening days of the Games.

Nigeria’s para-powerlifters had laid the foundation for the country’s strong campaign by delivering multiple gold medals and setting world records, once again proving why the nation remains a global powerhouse in para sports.

The weightlifters have now picked up the baton, contributing significantly to the country’s growing medal haul and ensuring that Nigeria remains among the leading nations at Glasgow 2026.

    Confidence grows ahead of athletics

Lawal’s latest gold medal is expected to provide additional motivation for other Team Nigeria athletes still to compete.

Attention is gradually shifting to the athletics events, where several Nigerian stars are expected to challenge for medals.

National sprint record holder Kanyinsola Ajayi has already secured an automatic place in the men’s 100 metres semi-finals based on his world ranking, while the country’s relay teams and field athletes are also expected to compete strongly.

Nigeria is equally optimistic about its boxing, wrestling and table tennis contingents, disciplines that have traditionally contributed to the nation’s medal success at major multi-sport events.

    Strong statement of intent

Lawal’s title defence once again demonstrated the resilience and consistency that have made her one of Nigeria’s most successful weightlifters.

Successfully defending a Commonwealth title is never an easy task, particularly against a field featuring experienced lifters from Canada, Australia and other top weightlifting nations.

Yet the Nigerian champion not only retained her crown but did so in emphatic fashion by rewriting the Games record books and finishing comfortably ahead of the competition.

Her achievement reflects the growing strength of Nigerian weightlifting and serves as further evidence that the country remains a major force in Commonwealth sport.

With six gold medals already secured and several medal events still to come, Team Nigeria’s ambitions of recording one of its finest Commonwealth Games performances remain firmly on course.

For Lawal, the victory represents another defining moment in an already distinguished career. For Nigeria, it is another reminder that the country’s athletes continue to excel on the international stage, inspiring millions of sports lovers back home while raising the nation’s flag high in Glasgow.
