High fuel prices have become one of the most economic concerns for many African countries.

10 African countries with the highest fuel prices in July 2026

    • Global petrol prices edged up slightly in the past month, with the worldwide average rising from $1.48 per litre to $1.49 per litre.
    • Malawi, Rwanda, the Central African Republic, Seychelles, and Kenya recorded modest increases in petrol prices compared to the previous month.
    • Zimbabwe, Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Cape Verde saw slight declines in fuel prices over the same period.
    • Senegal broke into Africa’s top 10 most expensive petrol markets, displacing South Africa from the list.

With much of the continent relying significantly on road travel to transport people and commodities, spikes in fuel and diesel prices swiftly spread throughout whole economies, rising living costs, reducing corporate activity, and placing pressure on governments.

Nigeria serves as a recent illustration of this tendency, as sometime during this month the Dangote Refinery hiked loading prices of fuel, even experimenting with the idea of selling fuel to marketers in dollars.

This, of course, sparked panic in the market as experts deduced that the move would have a significant effect on the Nigerian economy as a whole.

One of the most serious repercussions of high gasoline prices is on essential products and services.

Higher transportation costs raise the prices of food, manufactured products, and critical services, as firms pass on higher operating costs to customers.

This reduces household purchasing power, especially in nations where salaries haven’t kept up with inflation.

Additionally, high fuel prices can affect manufacturers, farmers, logistics companies, and small businesses that frequently rely on fuel-powered transportation or generators, and fuel-powered electrical generators.

As gasoline gets more costly, manufacturing costs rise, causing businesses to raise prices, restrict productivity, or lay off employees.

High gasoline prices might also stifle economic growth, as consumers devote more of their cash to transportation and energy, leaving less for discretionary expenditure.

This lowers demand in industries like retail, hotel, and entertainment, decreasing overall economic activity.

The scenario may deteriorate if global oil prices continue to be high. Brent crude has risen beyond $100 per barrel as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have flared up, raising fears about interruptions to important shipping routes.

Analysts fear that tighter global diesel and gasoline supply might trigger another round of fuel price hikes in African nations that import fuel.

With that said, here are the African countries with the highest cost of fuel in July 2026, per data from GlobalPetrolPrices.

Compared to last month’s list, when the global average price of petrol was 1.48 U.S. dollars per liter, compared to 1.49 U.S. dollars per liter this month, fuel prices for Malawi, Rwanda, CAR, Seychelles, and Kenya increased marginally.

While prices for Zimbabwe, Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Cape Verde reduced slightly.

Senegal ousted South Africa this month from the top 10 list.
