The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON)  is becoming one of East Africa’s largest infrastructure projects. This is with billions of dollars flowing into transport, hospitality, and public services alongside football venues.

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are accelerating investments in stadiums, airports, roads, hotels, and healthcare ahead of AFCON 2027. This is betting on the tournament strengthening tourism, trade, and regional integration long after the final match.

    Why You Should Care

The tournament marks the first time Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will jointly host Africa’s biggest football competition. But beyond sport, governments are using Afcon 2027 to fast-track infrastructure projects that could boost tourism, improve connectivity, and strengthen regional trade for years after the tournament ends.

For businesses in apresents a significant wave of public investment and new commercial opportunities

    The Details

With less than a year before the Confederation of African Footballbegins inspecting venues, all three countries are working to meet tournament requirements.

Kenya is upgrading the Moi International Sports Centre at Kasarani with expanded seating, modern media facilities, enhanced security systems, and improved player amenities. The country is also building Talanta Sports City, a new multi-purpose stadium expected to become one of East Africa’s flagship sporting venues.

Tanzania is modernizing Benjamin Mkapa Stadium while upgrading broadcasting capabilities, security infrastructure, and spectator facilities to comply with CAF standards.

Uganda committed more than USD 608 million toward Afcon preparations. The funding includes investments in sports infrastructure, tournament logistics, roads, airports, hospitals, and electricity networks. Additionally, it includes water systems, hotels, and other public services needed to support the competition.

Government officials say major venues and eight designated training facilities will be completed before the end of 2026, giving CAF enough time to inspect and certify them ahead of the June 2027 tournament. Hoima City Stadium has already been completed, while expansion work continues at Mandela National Stadium.

Preparations extend beyond stadiums. Passenger facilities are being developed at Kabalega International Airport, road networks connecting host cities are being upgraded, and Uganda is allocating additional funding to help hotels meet international accommodation standards.

    The Ripple

The scale of investment has also increased pressure for greater transparency.

Ugandan lawmakers are calling for tighter oversight of AFCON-related spending to avoid procurement challenges that affected previous large public projects. Concerns intensified after President Yoweri Museveni revealed that his administration blocked proposals that would have significantly increased road construction costs and later dismissed several senior officials linked to infrastructure projects under investigation.

At the regional level, Afcon 2027 is also becoming a test of East African integration. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are discussing a joint Pamoja Visa and temporary visa fee waivers to make travel between host countries easier during the tournament.

If implemented, the initiative could encourage visitors to explore multiple destinations across the region, benefiting airlines, hotels, tour operators, restaurants, and transport providers while promoting East Africa as a single tourism destination.

    What to Watch

The next major milestone will be CAF’s venue inspections, which are expected to begin within the coming year.

Whether the tournament delivers a lasting economic legacy will depend on more than completed stadiums. The long-term impact will hinge on whether the three countries finish key infrastructure projects on time, maintain transparency in public spending, and successfully coordinate transport, tourism, and border policies.

If those efforts succeed, AFCON 2027 could become a milestone not only for African football but also for East Africa’s broader economic integration and investment ambitions.
