As countries race to find a way to regulate rapidly evolving artificial intelligence around the world, law schools are developing new specializations to adapt.
University College London has launched a new LL.M. specialization in Law and Technology for the 2026-27 school year.
UCL states that the program will examine the intersection between legal rules and practice, technological change, and regulatory frameworks.
Aside from AI, the program will also look at data governance and digital rights, media and platform regulation, competition in digital markets, financial technology, and intellectual property law.
UCL promised that students would, by the end of the program, have a critical understanding of approaches to deal with legal challenges and address them in the commercial, government and public-sector field.
The school announced it was holding an online event aimed at prospective students in June on AI, technology law and digital regulation hosted by Michael Veale, professor of technology, law and policy.
Called “Can Law Stop Criminals Misusing AI?,” Veale would look at the misuse of AI and how the law can respond to it, such as deepfakes, scams and cyberattacks.
City St George’s, University of London is offering a Technology, AI and Legal Services LL.M. with students studying intellectual property law, data protection law, contract law and tort law.
The program includes a look at how generative AI, AI governance and deepfakes are impacting legal practice. Like other LL.M. programs at the school, students have the chance to do a live project with an employer to gain more work experience.
In the U.S., the University of Southern California Gould School of Law is now offering an LL.M. in Artificial Intelligence and Technology Law.
The program focuses on AI governance, privacy law, IP, antitrust, ethical considerations on AI and technology transactions.
The school states it will help students navigate the legal and regulatory landscape of new and developing technologies, and allow them to deal with compliance and risk management.
