UNESCO World Heritage Committee just announced their list of new World Heritage sites for 2026 after meeting in Busan Korea.
The list includes 25 properties all told, 6 inscribed for their natural importance, 19 for their cultural significance, and one mixed site, the wider area of Mount Olympus, designated for both its natural and cultural value. Two current sites, Berlin’s modernist housing estates and Korea’s Getbol tidal mudflats, were expanded considerably.
The latest additions celebrate ancient civilizations, religious landmarks, remarkable architecture and biodiversity hotspots while reinforcing UNESCO‘s commitment to preserving the world’s cultural and natural heritage for future generations.
The inscription of the D-Day Landing beaches is set to garner the most headlines. The five beaches have been recognised for their role in the largest amphibious landing in history and the return of peace in Europe. So too the inclusion of the Greater area of Mount Olympus in Greece, particularly after the success of Christopher Nolan’s cinematic retelling of Homer’s The Odyssey.
Some of the world’s smallest nations are celebrating being included on the list for the very first time. The historic medinas of the tiny island nation of Comoros have been recognised for their recognises their synthesis of African and Islamic traditions. São Tomé and Príncipe’s colonial roças (plantations) have been listed for their architectural value and as a reminder of their dark indentured past. While in South Sudan, the world’s newest nation, the vast mosaic of wetlands and savannas that supports the world’s largest migration of land mammals receives much-needed protection.

Indeed, the Boma–Badingilo Migratory Landscape of South Sudan is one of three of the new World Heritage sites immediately placed on the World Heritage Danger list as well. Civil unrest and wildlife poaching pose the biggest threat here. Two other new endangered inscriptions, the Amal Castles of Lebanon and the ancient Palestinian village of Sebastia, are under threat from ongoing fighting in the region.
