Ethiopian FM Dr. Gedion Timothewos urges <a href="https://absafricatv9491.live-website.com/fifa-africa-office-opens-in-rabat-impact-on-global-football/” title=”FIFA Africa Office Opens in Rabat: Impact on Global Football”>Africa to shape the global order, focusing on sustainable AU financing, growth, and Agenda 2063 goals.
(Nairobi, Kenya) — Africa must position itself as an active strategic player capable of shaping the new international order rather than remaining a passive observer amid shifting global power dynamics, stated Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Gedion Timothewos.
Dr. Gedion addressed foreign ministers and continental delegates at the opening of the 49th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council in Addis Ababa, marking the start of the two-day summit. Convened under the core agenda item “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve Agenda 2063,” the session brought structural focus to the continent’s development targets.
Highlighting the profound transformations taking place across global governance structures, Dr. Timothewos stated that escalating geopolitical competition, rapid technological shifts, climate shocks, and ongoing contests over strategic natural reAfrican nations must seize this transitional period to deliver continental solutions to global challenges through a strengthened African Union
Economic Prospects and AU Financing
Despite a volatile international environment, Dr. Timothewos pointed to Africa’s strong economic trajectory, noting that eight of the world’s ten fastest-growing economies in 2026 are on the continent.
“Africa is poised to serve as the main engine of global economic growth in the second half of the 21st century,” he added.
Addressing the operational challenges of the continental organization headquartered in Addis Ababa, he stressed that the African Union must secure sustainable and reliable internal financing mechanisms to execute its policy decisions independently. He also affirmed Ethiopia’s continued commitment to strengthening continental unity and supporting AU institutions.
Regarding regional integration, Dr. Timothewos emphasized that shared continental re, and cooperation. He reiterated that regional disputes and development challenges require resolution within established African legal frameworks and institutional mechanisms
In closing, the Minister expressed Ethiopia’s solidarity with African nations affected by the recent Ebola outbreak and commended the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for its proactive mobilization and response efforts.
