The Communist Party of India (Marxist), Dakshina Kannada District Committee, on Tuesday, demanded strict legal action against Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna and other BJP leaders for allegedly issuing life threat to actor-activist Prakash Raj and the Rahul Gandhi family at a protest meeting in Udupi.

In a statement here, Committee Secretary Muneer Katipalla said the meeting organised by the BJP in Udupi to oppose the student protests was more like a meeting of a goon gang threatening lives. He said Mr. Suvarna threatened to push Mr. Raj into the Arabian Sea.

The MLA not only insulted Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi as a drug addict, but also directly said the Gandhi family will be destroyed just like the Babri Masjid. He falsely accused the leaders of the student protest in Manipal and the faculty there of being drug peddlers.

Mr. Katipalla said people of the coast should unanimously oppose this political hooliganism, threats to life, and fascist-like behaviour of Mr. Suvarna and the BJP. A clear message should be given that such political hooliganism and mafia-like behaviour will not be allowed in civil society. The secular, pro-people party organisations of the coast should show solidarity in this matter. The Karnataka government and Udupi police should immediately take appropriate legal action, he demanded.
