Egypt’s participation at the ongoing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has sparked a lively debate on social media, with many football fans questioning why the team wears seven stars above its national badge despite never winning the continental women’s title.

The discussion gained momentum after images of the Egyptian women’s team, popularly known as the Cleopatras, circulated online, prompting supporters to ask whether the stars represented WAFCON triumphs.

However, the seven stars do not commemorate achievements by the women’s team. Instead, they honour the Egyptian men’s national team’s record seven Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles, won in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010.

Egypt remains the most successful men’s team in AFCON history.

The badge has divided opinion across social media platforms.

While some supporters believe the stars reflect the country’s overall football heritage and should be worn by all national teams, others argue that stars displayed on a team’s jersey should represent titles won by that specific team.

Several Nigerian fans joined the debate, with some joking that the Super Eagles should also wear stars reflecting Nigeria’s continental successes if Egypt’s women are permitted to display the men’s achievements.

Others called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to provide clear guidelines on the use of stars by national teams across different competitions.

The discussion has also revived memories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when FIFA reportedly instructed Egypt’s men’s team to remove the seven stars from their World Cup shirts because the stars represented continental, rather than FIFA World Cup, titles.

Although the debate continues online, Egypt’s women’s team is still chasing its first WAFCON title, making the stars above their badge one of the tournament’s most talked-about off-field storylines.
