Major General Sizakhele Dyantyi has been appointed as the new Western Cape Police Commissioner.

He succeeds Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, who retired at the end of last month after serving five years in the post.

Major General Luyanda Damoyi has been acting commissioner over the past month.

Dyantyi will officially assume the rank of Lieutenant General and take over as the Western Cape’s top cop at the beginning of next month.

Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane announced the appointment in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Dyantyi’s appointment forms part of the SAPS Police Reset Agenda, which targets 140 high-crime police precincts across the country for intensified policing.

He takes office as the Western Cape grapples with deadly mass shootings in urban and rural districts.

Meanwhile, Operation Prosper, a joint deployment of the SANDF, SAPS and law enforcement officers launched in April, remains in place to bolster crime-fighting efforts in the Cape.

New provincial police commissioners will also take office in Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga next week.
