The Madlanga Commission will institute criminal charges against a person who disclosed the identity of a witness who testified anonymously.
Since the commission began its hearings last September, it has had several witnesses testify anonymously, largely due to fears for their lives.
Marius van der Merwe, who was given the alias “Witness D”, was killed last year a few weeks after giving testimony to the commission.
Commission chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga said disclosing the identity of anonymous witnesses was a criminal offence.
“Consequently, the commission is going to institute criminal proceedings against that person. This is a matter the commission takes very seriously and it simply must act in these circumstances,” Madlanga said.
