Kenya, 28 July 2026 – Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has launched an urgent investigation following the mysterious deaths of 14 elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem over the past three weeks, raising fresh concerns over the health of one of Africa’s most important elephant populations and the wider conservation challenges facing Kenya’s wildlife.

The elephants, comprising different ages and sexes, were discovered in separate locations on community ranches surrounding Amboseli National Park, between 15 and 30 kilometres from the park’s boundaries, prompting veterinarians and wildlife experts to begin extensive investigations.

Speaking to the Media, KWS Head of Communication Duncan Wanyama said preliminary investigations were still underway and cautioned against speculation until scientific analysis is complete.

“When I spoke to the head of the Rapid Response Team (RRT), he told me they were still gathering information before reaching a conclusion. He also clarified that the elephants did not die inside Amboseli National Park. They were found on surrounding ranches, some about 15 kilometres away from the park and others nearly 30 kilometres away,” Wanyama said.

According to KWS, veterinary teams have collected tissue and environmental samples from the carcasses, which have since been forwarded to the Government Chemist for laboratory analysis to establish the exact cause of death. Officials have not ruled out disease, poisoning, environmental contamination or other possible causes.

The deaths have alarmed conservationists because Amboseli is internationally recognized as one of Africa’s most significant elephant conservation landscapes and home to some of the continent’s last surviving “super tuskers” bull elephants whose tusks each weigh more than 45 kilograms.

The ecosystem has already experienced major wildlife losses this year. In January, conservationists mourned the death of Craig, one of Kenya’s most celebrated super tuskers, which died from natural causes after advanced age affected its ability to feed. KWS later announced plans to preserve Craig through taxidermy for conservation education.

Earlier in the year, authorities also investigated a suspected poisoning incident in the Amboseli ecosystem that killed six lions and dozens of vultures, highlighting the increasing threats facing wildlife outside protected areas.

The latest deaths have also attracted political attention, with Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku calling for KWS to expedite investigations and publicly disclose its findings.

“We said, what is happening to our elephants? These animals are ours. We want to get a report. Because KWS has taken samples. We want to get a report: what killed thirteen of our elephants in three weeks? It has never happened,” Lenku said.

His remarks reflect growing anxiety among communities living around Amboseli, where elephants are both a major tourism asset and an integral part of the Maasai cultural landscape.

The governor also linked the incident to the long-running debate over management of the Amboseli ecosystem, saying local communities deserve timely information whenever significant wildlife incidents occur.

Wildlife experts note that determining the cause of elephant deaths can take several days or even weeks, particularly where poisoning, infectious disease or environmental contamination is suspected.

Under Kenya’s Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, KWS is required to investigate wildlife deaths, particularly involving endangered or high-value species such as elephants, to determine whether they resulted from natural causes, disease, human-wildlife conflict, poaching or criminal activity.

Elephants can succumb to a range of threats including anthrax, poisoning, drought-induced starvation, contaminated watererefore essential before authorities can determine appropriate conservation interventions

Kenya hosts approximately 36,000 elephants, with Amboseli representing one of the country’s flagship conservation areas due to decades of scientific monitoring and successful community conservation initiatives.

Unlike fenced parks, however, many Amboseli elephants spend considerable time on surrounding community lands, making cooperation between KWS, county governments and local communities critical to their survival.

Should investigations reveal disease or environmental contamination, conservation experts say rapid intervention will be necessary to prevent further wildlife losses within the wider Amboseli ecosystem.

For now, KWS says investigations remain ongoing and has urged the public to await the outcome of scientific tests before drawing conclusions about what may have caused one of the largest unexplained elephant mortality events recorded in the Amboseli landscape in recent years.

The KWS probe seeks to determine whether the deaths of elephants resulted from natural causes, disease, human-wildlife conflict, poaching or criminal activity.
