The regional inception workshop for the Dairy Interventions for Mitigation and Adaptation (DaIMA) programme will be held in Nairobi on July 28–30, 2026. The initiative is aimed at developing climate-resilient dairy production in East Africa.
The programme has a total budget of $358.26 million, including a $150 million contribution from the Green Climate Fund. The project is being implemented with the participation of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the governments of Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, as well as industry partners.
The programme includes the modernization of veterinary and extension services, the development of breeding programmes, improvements to the feed supply and the provision of climate information to farmers. Particular attention will be paid to pasture and manure management, reducing milk losses and improving access to finance for dairy-sector businesses.
Approximately 2.5 million rural residents are expected to benefit directly from the programme. More than 15 million additional people may benefit indirectly through the development of the entire milk production and processing value chain.
The International Dairy Federation (IDF) will serve as a technical partner of the project. IDF representative Apolina Fos will participate in the meeting in Nairobi. The federation plans to provide expertise in dairy-sector standards and international knowledge exchange.
DaIMA is the Green Climate Fund’s first programme specifically focused on livestock. Its implementation is scheduled to continue until 2031. The project is expected to simultaneously increase dairy productivity, strengthen farmers’ resilience to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emission intensity.
