Lekki Port, promoters of the Lekki Deep Seaport, over the weekend received the maiden call of the HMM–ONE Alliance service on Saturday,l, in a development that further strengthens the port’s integration into global shipping routes and reinforces its position as a key gateway for international trade.

The historic vessel call follows the launch of the Mediterranean West Africa Service (MA2), a new container shipping service jointly operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and Ocean Network Express (ONE). The partnership extends the reach of the two leading global carriers to Lekki Port through a shared service connecting major ports in Europe and West Africa.

The MA2 service is expected to provide greater opportunities for Nigerian importers and exporters by strengthening connectivity with major international markets, improving cargo movement and supporting more efficient trade across Europe and West Africa.

It also reinforces ongoing efforts to enhance Nigeria’s maritime competitiveness, increase direct vessel calls and facilitate the seamless movement of cargo through modern port infrastructure.

The Managing Director of Lekki Port, Wang Qiang, said the arrival of the HMM-ONE alliance service underscores the port’s growing reputation as a strategic hub capable of supporting larger cargo volumes and more efficient supply chains.

“We are delighted to welcome the maiden call of the HMM-ONE alliance service to Lekki Port. The inclusion of Lekki Port in the new Mediterranean West Africa Service reflects the increasing confidence that leading global shipping lines have in our capabilities and the value we offer as a modern deep-sea port. This new service expands trade opportunities for our customers, strengthens Nigeria’s connectivity to key international markets and further advances our vision of positioning Lekki Port as the leading gateway for trade and logistics in West Africa,” Qiang said.

The inclusion of Lekki Port in the MA2 service rotation underscores its growing strategic importance on international shipping routes and reflects the confidence of leading global carriers in its world-class infrastructure and operational capabilities. It also reinforces the port’s ability to meet evolving industry demands through its deep draught, modern facilities and efficient operations, while supporting Nigeria’s ambition to become a leading maritime and trade hub in West Africa.
