Africa’s young innovators earn global stage at China competition
From Artificial Intelligence, or AI, powered industrial solutions to technologies tackling food safety, clean water, and healthcare, African university students showcased innovations on Monday aimed at addressing the continent’s development challenges.
The students got the chance at the Africa Division finals of the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The contest brought together 20 student teams from universities in several African countries, who presented innovations in agriculture, healthcare, environmental sustainability, manufacturing, and digital technology. Five teams won gold medals and qualified for the global finals in China, while the other 15 received silver medals.
Speaking at the event, Kenya’s Principal Secretary, State Department for Science, Research and Innovation Shaukat Abdulrazak said Africa’s youthful population presents an opportunity to drive innovation-led development.
Abdulrazak also called for greater investment in research commercialization, start-ups, and partnerships linking universities, industry, and investors.
“Innovation is very critical because we have quite a number of challenges,” Abdulrazak said, noting that solutions are needed to improve food production, strengthen water security, combat diseases, and boost agricultural productivity.
He urged universities to produce technology creators and entrepreneurs capable of addressing society’s needs.
Abdulrazak also lauded the longstanding partnership between China and Africa in education, research, and capacity building, citing collaboration between Nanjing Agricultural University and Kenyan institutions as an example of how academic partnerships are helping to build scientific and technological capacity.
He said stronger collaboration between governments, universities, research institutions, and the private sector would be essential to transform promising ideas into market-ready innovations.
Henry Rotich, chairman of the Kenya-China Alumni Association, said the competition demonstrated the growing impact of educational cooperation between Africa and China, adding that many African graduates from Chinese universities are contributing to research, government, healthcare, engineering, and business across the continent.
