Six Bangladeshis killed, one injured in South Africa
DHAKA, July 28, 2026 (BSS) – At least six Bangladeshi nationals were killed
and another injured in a devastating fire at a shop in South Africa’s Eastern
Cape Province early today, according to the Bangladesh High Commission in
Pretoria.
The Bangladesh High Commission expressed profound shock and sorrow over the
loss of lives and said it was taking necessary steps to assist the victims
and their families.
In a statement, the mission prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls,
conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved families and wished a speedy
recovery for the injured Bangladeshi national.
The fire reportedly broke out at around 3:00 am local time at a shop in Tsomo
town near Queenstown in the Eastern Cape Province.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to South Africa Shah Ahmed Shafi is scheduled to
visit Tsomo today to inspect the scene and inquire about the deceased and
injured Bangladeshis, according to the mission.
During the visit, the high commissioner is also expected to meet relevant
stakeholders and hold formal meetings with officials of the local
administration and the South African Police.
The meetings are expected to focus on the latest situation, progress in the
investigation, necessary assistance for the affected Bangladeshis and further
steps to be taken.
The Bangladesh High Commission said it remains committed to providing all
possible support on behalf of the Bangladesh government to the affected
nationals and their families.
