The Ministry of Culture marked on Monday the 70th anniversary of Romania’s accession to UNESCO, reaffirming the country’s commitment to protecting cultural and natural heritage, supporting education, research and creativity, and working with international partners to promote the organisation’s core values.

‘Today marks 70 years since Romania became a UNESCO member state, beginning a cooperation that has helped promote Romanian heritage, culture and values internationally. Over these seven decades, Romania has made an important contribution to UNESCO programmes and initiatives, advancing the protection of cultural and natural heritage, cultural diversity, education and international cooperation,’ the Culture Ministry wrote in a Facebook post.

Romania is represented at UNESCO through its World Heritage sites, internationally recognised intangible cultural heritage elements, the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, UNESCO Global Geoparks, cities in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, and numerous UNESCO-associated schools that help promote these values to younger generations.

Romania continues to play an active role within UNESCO, currently holding a seat on the organisation’s Executive Board over 2025 – 2029, after holding the Presidency of the UNESCO General Conference – the organisation’s highest decision-making body – from 2023 to 2025.
