Kenya has moved into the African Union’s highest financial contribution tier, joining the continent’s largest economies in funding the continental body as African leaders seek to reduce dependence on external donors.

The move places Kenya alongside Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa as the AU’s top contributors, reflecting Nairobi’s growing economic influence and role within the organisation.

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who is attending the 49th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Addis Ababa, described the development as a major milestone for Kenya’s position in Africa.

“This is a vote of confidence in Kenya’s expanding economic influence and leadership across Africa,” Mudavadi said.

The African Union has for years faced financial challenges, with a large portion of its programmes and peacekeeping operations relying on support from external partners.

Kenya has traditionally ranked among the AU’s top ten financial contributors, and its elevation to the highest tier signals a greater commitment to supporting the organisation’s operations and reform agenda.

The AU groups member states into three contribution tiers, largely based on the size of their economies.

Ethiopia has also joined the highest tier, while Angola had previously moved into the category, expanding what was previously referred to as the AU’s “Big Five” contributors — Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa.

The announcement came as African foreign ministers met in Addis Ababa to discuss the AU budget, institutional reforms and African candidates for senior positions in international organisations ahead of the Mid-Year Coordination Summit.

Kenya’s decision aligns with President William Ruto’s push for stronger African institutions that are financed by Africans themselves, a position Nairobi has repeatedly advanced in discussions on continental governance, peace and development.

The expanded group of top contributors is expected to reduce the AU’s reliance on donor funding and provide greater financial stability for implementing its programmes across the continent.
