Electric vehicles are changing the safari experience in ways that few visitors imagined a decade ago.

The familiar diesel rumble is giving way to silence, allowing guests to hear birdsong, insect calls and the crunch of tyres on gravel.

While electric game viewers remain uncommon, they are already proving that the future of wildlife tourism may literally sound very different.

South Africa is among the countries leading this shift. Cheetah Plains Private Game Reserve, bordering the Kruger National Park, pioneered luxury electric safari vehicles by converting Toyota Land Cruisers into battery-powered game viewers.

Similar trials are underway across Kenya, Botswana and Tanzania as operators search for cleaner and cheaper ways to explore the bush.

HOW ARE ELECTRIC VEHICLES ALREADY CHANGING SAFARIS?

The biggest advantage is silence. Diesel engines create mechanical noise that can alter animal behaviour. Research tracking more than 220 encounters across eight mammal species found that animals allowed electric vehicles to approach much closer before fleeing.

Scientists measure this as a shorter Flight-Initiation Distance, showing that engine noise plays a major role in startling wildlife.

Guests also enjoy a richer experience. Guides no longer compete with engine noise while explaining animal behaviour. Birds, frogs and primates continue their natural calls without acoustic masking from diesel engines.

Operators benefit too.

Electric safari vehicles typically travel 80 to 100 kilometres on a single charge. Most game drives cover only 27 to 50 kilometres, making daily operations practical. Running costs can fall below R0.50 per kilometre, compared with roughly R3.50 for diesel vehicles. Many lodges recharge during the midday break using existing solar installations.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES FOR OPERATORS AND WILDLIFE?

The biggest obstacle remains the purchase price. Retrofitting a safari vehicle can cost between about R1.1 million and R1.9 million, depending on the battery size and the complexity of the conversion. Even so, many operators expect to recover those costs within three to five years through lower fuel and maintenance expenses.

Remote servicing also presents difficulties. Skilled high-voltage technicians remain scarce in many bush regions. Charging takes hours rather than minutes, although this usually happens while guests relax between morning and afternoon drives.

Wildlife also faces new risks.

Silent vehicles may increase the chance of collisions with tortoises, snakes and other slow-moving animals that cannot hear them approaching.

Some researchers also caution that animals could become too accustomed to vehicles. Emerging studies are examining whether ultrasonic sounds emitted by electronic components affect bats and certain insects, although evidence remains limited.

WILL ELECTRIC VEHICLES BECOME THE SAFARI STANDARD?

The outlook suggests steady growth rather than an overnight revolution. Rising fuel prices, improving battery technology and expanding solar power make electric fleets increasingly attractive for lodge-based safaris.

Electric motors also produce exceptional low-speed torque, approaching 980 Nm in some conversions. This helps vehicles negotiate sand, mud and rocky tracks with ease.

Most experts expect hybrid systems to remain important where charging infrastructure is limited.

Yet for reserves operating game drives of less than 100 kilometres each day, electric vehicles are becoming a practical long-term solution.

Future visitors may remember not the sound of an engine, but the call of a fish eagle echoing across the bush.
