The University of Lagos (UNILAG) will host the 20+1 Carnival edition, themed “Humanity in the Age of AI,” on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the UNILAG Sports Centre, as students of the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies present their annual <a href="https://absafricatv9491.live-website.com/top-10-largest-stadiums-in-africa-and-where-they-are-located/” title=”Top 10 largest stadiums in Africa and where they are located”>African/Caribbean Theatre Laboratory (THA 344) production.
The carnival will showcase the cultures of Africa, Brazil, Haiti, Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Trinidad & Tobago, celebrating cultural heritage while exploring the relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence.
Far from being just a colourful celebration, the UNILAG Carnival is an academic production rooted in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies. As part of the THA 344 (African/Caribbean Theatre Laboratory) course, students spend months researching cultures, designing costumes, constructing floats, composing music, rehearsing performances, and managing every aspect of production. Every performance, every costume, and every movement is a product of rigorous academic engagement and practical learning.
This year’s edition embraces the idea of “One Continent, One Carnival,” bringing together the cultural identities of Africa, Brazil, Haiti, Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Trinidad & Tobago. Against the backdrop of artificial intelligence, the carnival reminds audiences that while machines may process information, only humanity possesses the imagination, empathy, cultural memory, and storytelling traditions that define civilizations.
At the heart of this enduring legacy stands Dr. Cornelius Eze Onyekaba, a lecturer whose name has become inseparable from the evolution of the UNILAG Carnival. For twenty consecutive editions—including this year’s 20+1 celebration, Onyekaba has remained the driving force behind the festival’s academic excellence and artistic vision.
Under his leadership, the carnival has grown from a classroom exercise into one of Nigeria’s most respected university cultural festivals. His philosophy of “scholarship in motion” has shaped generations of students, demonstrating that theatre is not merely performed—it is researched, preserved, interpreted, and lived.
His commitment has inspired thousands of students to see performance as a serious academic discipline. Beyond choreography and spectacle, participants develop project management skills, cultural intelligence, leadership, research competence, costume and production design expertise, teamwork, and event management experience. These are skills that continue to serve graduates long after they leave the University of Lagos.
Behind every successful carnival is a team whose work often goes unseen. The logistics team represents the invisible engine of the 20+1 edition. Their countless hours of planning, scheduling, coordination, procurement, transportation, safety management, and operational support ensured that every rehearsal, parade, and performance came together seamlessly. Their dedication reflects the collaborative spirit that has always defined the UNILAG Carnival.
The carnival’s impact extends well beyond entertainment. It has become one of the university’s strongest symbols of experiential learning, attracting students, alumni, industry professionals, and visitors from across Nigeria. It strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration, preserves African and Caribbean cultural heritage, promotes tourism and creative enterprise and showcases the University of Lagos as a centre for innovation in arts education.
