From masterminding Rugby World Cup triumphs to setting unbeaten records and revolutionising the Springboks’ playing style, these coaches have left an unforgettable mark on the green and gold.

5. Peter de Villiers

When talking about minimum recognition but great achievements, Peter de Villiers’ legacy lives beyond the paper pagers of a record book. Great achievements are always aligned with wins and trophies but hardly with transforming strategies that unify teams beyond losses. Appointed in 2008 as South Africa’s first Black Springbok head coach, he guided the team through one of its most successful post-World Cup periods.

Under his leadership, the Springboks won the 2009 Tri Nations and famously defeated the British & Irish Lions in a memorable series victory. South Africa also recorded 30 wins from 48 Tests during his tenure. Although his reign ended with a disappointing 2011 Rugby World Cup quarter-final defeat to Australia, De Villiers broke new ground for South African rugby while delivering silverware and memorable victories.

4. Nick Mallett

Nick Mallett transformed the Springboks into one of the most feared teams in world rugby, after taking charge in 1997. His greatest achievement came between 1997 and 1998 when South Africa recorded a then world-record 17 consecutive Test victories, a run that still ranks among the greatest in international rugby history. He also led the Springboks to the 1998 Tri Nations title while playing an exciting brand of rugby, that the All Blacks and Wallabies simply had no answer to.

Although Mallett narrowly missed out on a Rugby World Cup, his remarkable winning percentage of 71.1% and record-breaking achievements ensure his place among South Africa’s greatest coaches.

3. Jake White

Making it to the top three of the greatest Springboks rugby coaches of all time is Jake White. He was appointed to the top job in 2004 and immediately made an impact by guiding South Africa to the Tri Nations title in his very first season, which earned him World Rugby Coach of the Year honours. White continued rebuilding the squad despite a difficult 2006 campaign, where injuries tested the Springboks’ depth to the very limit.

His biggest triumph came in 2007 when South Africa defeated England to lift the Rugby World Cup for the second time. White deserves enormous credit for assembling one of the greatest Springbok squads ever, featuring players such as John Smit, Victor Matfield, Bryan Habana, Fourie du Preez and Schalk Burger.

2. Kitch Christie

Less than a year before the 1995 World Cup, Kitch Christie revamped the springboks into world champions on home soil. He was the Springboks’ head coach between the years 1994 and 1996, and oversaw the incredible 1995 title triumph which transcended the game. In his leadership he led the country to its first Rugby World Cup trophy after the Springboks were initially banned from rugby four years prior.

The image of President Nelson Mandela presenting the Webb Ellis Cup to Francois Pienaar became one of the defining moments in South African sporting history and in post-apartheid unity. Remarkably, Christie never lost a Test as Springbok coach, winning all 14 matches he oversaw. Down to the first name on the list is the Springbok’s 52-year-old current coach. Rassie Erasmus returned to South African rugby in 2018 and instantly started making waves. Within two years, he had guided them to victory in the 2019 Rugby Championship before lifting the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Looking at the influence he has had, it does not come as a surprise to most people that he is the greatest Springboks coach of all time. After moving back into the Director of Rugby role, Erasmus remained central to South Africa’s planning, selection and tactical direction as the Springboks successfully defended their Rugby World Cup title in France, 2023.
